Tell us a little about Sheria Ngowi

- I am the Founder of the Sheria Ngowi designs,

- My parents were the one who inspired me since they too had an interest and sense of Fashion and trends at that time. I remember styling my parents before they went out and pretty soon I was the family stylist.  It was then I realized I had a talent in Fashion and now I became a designer!

- My career famously began in 2008 when I debuted my designs for men under Brand name Sheria Na Mavazi in Mysore,India. In 2009, I launched my first professional collection under my own name Sheria Ngowi Designs.  Now I decided to focus on both genders at the time  to ensure  that I put my all into each one of the SS11 collections.

-Mhhh…”My fashion philosophy is similar to my philosophy on life” The Idea behind Sheria Ngowi Designs is that Fashion is more than the clothes you wear, it’s a lifestyle.

Who inspires your designs?

So many sources but it primarily comes from my late Father who was an incredibly stylish man. He’s the reason I love suspenders instead of belts. In that case, my designs are heavily influenced by the past. So I blend modern trends with the classic vintage looks and incorporate numerous colors.

Who are your favorite emerging designers and what is it that you love about them?

Tom Ford, simply because he is solely responsible for the turnaround of one of the most stylish brands there is out there, Gucci. Other designers who deserve mention are Ozwald Boateng, Ralph Lauren,Paul Smith.

Where can people buy your items?

My website is under construction at the moment.  Once completed, interested customers will be supplied with all necessary information concerning how and where they can purchase my designs.

Where are you based?

I’m currently based in India (Bangalore City) because that’s where I was in college but I’ll soon be returning to Tanzania.

If you had to give men and women advice on style what would you say?

My goal is to give all the people, especially men & women of color, a platform of inspiration. I will be showcasing all things fashionable and stylish, so “step out of your boundaries and try something new”.

What is your best attribute?

I was my original inspiration.  I made my own path.  I didn’t look to what someone else had done.  I was in search of my own healing, my own self-worth.  I took my own journey.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

My father used to tell me one word ”Never Give Up”.

Can we get some background info from you? (Where you are from and what is your genre?)

I am a product of Atlanta, GA  where all white shoes and Georgia Red Clay do not agree. The home of the Bankhead bounce, Sear-sucker wearing in the summertime, from the filthy nasty dirty south I emerge to the scene bluesy and bold.

My musical genre is a hybrid of Jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop, Funk, Blues, and Soul. It is the music best described as ‘Brown Liquor Music’. There is no need for red cups or flasks just turn me up and incite feelings of intimacy, fellowship, and reflect until you become inebriated with positivity, substance, purpose, and, of course, funk!

Tell us a little about Candace

I’ve actually been a closet singer/songwriter for sometime now with aspirations of being an established novelist. Life has a way of positioning you to directly contribute to society. My journey unassumingly began with a Voice Note being sent via Blackberry Messenger to a friend (Joseph A. Parker). He immediately called me back with ideas of sharing my talent with others. I was a corporate worker with the heart of a blues singer. He saved me from calculated success and corporate ladder climbing. I am eternally thankful.

Were there any hardships you faced starting your music/poetry?

Poetry never has been a struggle for me. I have remained fearless with booking performances and events however; music is quite different. Being an independent artist is beautiful when you have complete autonomy in regards to creation, ideas, and inputs. Timing is the only factor that is subjective.

What (or who) inspires you?

What: I am inspired by nature, pain, people, music, silence, running water, Twitter, anything that will lubricate the wheels of creativity!

Who: My ancestors inspire me to continue my conquest equipping me with wisdom, guidance, and much lyrical content. Telling our story is important and relevant to our progression and mental freedom. Artists I admire and study include: Gill Scott-Heron, Charlie Parker, Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone, Jimi Hendrix, Billie Holiday, Outkast, John Coltrane, Bessie Smith, and Erykah Badu.

Who are your favorite emerging act what is it that you love about them?

I am completely enamored with B.o.B.’s “I’ll Be in the Sky”. His persona, fashion, delivery, and talent are impressive. His energy is so electric and Idilewild 2010! Let’s just say I’m a fan.

JaYRroD 4 loVe makes me fall in love with Hip-hop all over again. His sound is distinct, confident, he’s lyrically talented, and of pure intent.

What is your best attribute?

My best attribute would have to be my ability to adapt musically. My voice ranges from singing scales of “honey-dipped” proportion to belting out sorrowful and sultry sounds. Vintage yet cutting edge.

It is most important to keep a positive vibration, remained balanced, and continue to look within to encourage personal growth. When an artist has not personally grown his/her listeners are inclined to bear the same fruit.

Can we get some background info from you?

I was born in Morristown, New Jersey on September 10th, 1985.  I was first introduced to Hip Hop by my Uncle (Raised in Woodbridge, VA). I am a Virgo and it is  evident in my sensitivity.  Hip Hop is my base Genre but I try to sprinkle as much Soul and Funk on it as I can.  As far as songs: my ideas usually stem from the beat.  But in general, I get a lot of ideas from movies, photos, and different works of art.

JaYRroD 4 loVe because GOD is Love & Love is the Supreme Understanding of Life.  I made that my stage name to give GOD the Glory (though my music may not always & definitely strays) my name will be the foundation.

Not at all, when I was younger, my mother used to make me write in a journal: Whether it was during the summer or any vacation when I went away, I wrote.  I eventually took a liking to writing; I could express my self and say what I want.  It became 2nd nature.  Until she found my first rap and whooped my ass!!!

Life: different experiences and revelations that come on a day to day basis

Art: movies/cinematography, photos/photography, Paintings/sketch…

Looking at life as the glass half full instead of half empty can make you see things from an artful perspective.

First off – can we have a little background information – Where you live? How old you are? What motivates you? Inspires you?

I was born in New Haven, CT but right now I currently live in West Haven. I am 34 years old. But don’t tell anyone [Laughing out loud].
What motivates me? People, I’m motivated by the people. Whether it’s connecting with one another or encouraging them do better for themselves.
What inspires me? Oh that’s easy, mainly The Most High/GOD & life. That is what basically defines me. Life and everything about it inspires me as well.

Did reading a poem first spark the desire to write poetry or was it an experience?

Well to be truthful, I started as an emcee. I was and still am a huge fan of “The Roots” after hearing this poem on their second album I was like “Wow” I wrote poetry to myself but as the years went on poetry grew more and more on me. I soon found myself being a part of this movement of spoken word. And I meet a lot of great people along the way.

Your poetry has Jazz influence. Not only do you invoke the aura of Miles, Coltrane, Parker, etc. in your written word you also use jazz or bluesy tones in your performances. How did you come across all of this?

Wow! Thank you! I am humbled. Those are some great musicians you just mentioned. I thank you. I enjoy listen to Jazz. And I have some Miles and Coltrane albums. It all started ever since I saw “Mo’ Better Blues”. From there I had a love and appreciation for jazz.

You are many things. You are an actor, a musician, a poet. How do you balance different roles in your life?

[Smiling] Well I really can’t take credit for begin a musician since I don’t play any instruments. I can strike a few piano keys and read sheet music but one day I will learn how to play an instrument. So I guess the only hats I’m wearing would be actor, model, and poet. I must say, it can get difficult at times. What I try to do is, not put too much on my plate. Focus on one thing at a time and when the task is done move on to the next. Like I said I try and sometimes I forget that. [Laughter]

I know there is a meaning behind your name. Tell us about it:

My birth name is Tarishi and that is Swahili for “messenger”. My pseudonym is M.I.D.N.I.G.H.T. and it’s an acronym which stands for “Messiah Is Dominant Now Inspired God Helps Tarishi”.  Like I said earlier The LORD is my main inspiration.

Are you currently working on anything?

Yes, I’m currently working on a few things. I just did a photo shoot earlier this month. I’m in a fashion show in the end of this month and I’ll be in Springfield, MA this month performing at the Indie Soul Festival, I’m working with NuRevealed Photography on an up incoming calendar, and some more photo shoots.  To be honest I don’t like mentioning things until they happen. But I’m putting it all out there. I’ll leave it in God’s hands and pray for completion.

Are there poems that are meant to be read in silence, perhaps a silent meditation on meaning, that don’t need to be read out loud?

Of course. And to me those are the best ones. Those types of poems are very intimate and personal. And when you I do get the chance to share them it’s like therapy. It’s poetry. [smiling]

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

Hmmm. That’s a tough one. Hmmm…the first thing that comes to mind is. “Always put GOD first & don’t stop”

Which artists do you admire?

Wow! There’s some many …. You know the best way I can answer that question for you is. I admire any artist that is being true to themselves. And if you are an artist for a better tomorrow, I truly admire you and your work. Because what we artists do is a lot of hard work.

What is your best attribute?

Ooh. From what I was told, I have a good spirit. So to everyone that saw attribute in me I thank you. As for me, I would like to say I am very easy going.

What are your future goals?

Be successful in all that I do. While on this path help others I meet become successful too. Write a book and see the world.
