Why Michelle Obama Wore a Michael Kors Dress on Election Night…Again!

First Lady Michelle Obama!  That has a nice ring to it. Who doesn’t want to dress her?  Designers hold their breath and pray that she wears their pieces and displays them on the world’s stage.  After all, Mrs. Obama has embraced designs that have propelled designers like Jason Wu and Rachel Roy to fame.  The fashion world wants to throw flocks of garments her way but she still manages to restrain her choices.   So here we have Michelle in her magenta colored, metallic influenced, dress round two.

Michelle Obama’s dress for 2012’s election night was, in fact, a Michael Kors dress that she had worn before. The date was Nov 16th 2010.  The event: a medal of honor ceremony.  Barack Obama was presenting this Medal of Honor to Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta.  Michelle had rocked her trademark bob and cardigan to go along with this dress. Flash forward to the most important night for the Obama family and the dress made an appearance…again!

So why did Michelle Obama recycle a Michael Kors dress on election night?  Doesn’t she have an amble gathering of designers who would gladly dress her in a heartbeat?  Doesn’t she have a panel of stylist who can plan up to the tiniest detail of her public image?

The first lady may have chose to wear her Michael Kors (again) because….

  • For the purposes of simplicity
  • Not to upstage Barack Obama
  • She knows that expensive doesn’t always equal style
  • She’s economical
  • Michael Kors didn’t hassle her to wear her dresses like the “others” so she chose him again and again.
  • She’s busy with family matter and the election so an outfit is something that was an afterthought.
  • She’s not keeping up with the Joneses
  • Why buy something if you already have something you like?
  • A dress is a dress and at the end of the day Mrs. Obama has bigger, and better things, that she checks off her “Done” list.
  • She actually wore the dress for herself not for you or anyone else!
  • It’s her miracle dress. Some believe in stars…you get it.
  • It’s not a fashion show.  It’s election night.
  • It was a RE-election and it’s a free country where she can RE-wear a potato sack if she so pleases.
  • Her husband likes it and so does she. In the words of President Barack Obama:

……………………………………………………………………………………………

“I have never loved you more, I have never been prouder to watch the rest of America fall in love with you, too, as the nation’s First Lady.”

.…………………………………………………………………………………………..

What you can’t do is please everyone.  In the words of Bill Cosby: “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.”

Haters would have had a few words for Michele Obama had she taken to alternating only between expensive designer flocks…

-“Unbelievable to know where our tax dollars are going” (even the unemployed non-taxpayer’s hell would break loose)!

- “So this is where the White House budget goes”.

-“There are children starving in African as she embraces diamonds and pearls”.

-“Commander in Chief get a hold of your woman”!

-“This is a recession”.

At the end of the day, Michelle Obama is not defined by what designer she wears.  It’s not about what you are wearing.  It’s all about what you are doing.  You can be covered from head to toe in diamonds and still remain unmoving like a stale, stagnant, river.  She wore the same outfit twice so what!  Oh hell nawww!  The world is ending!

It’s great to have a first lady who has better things to accomplish than sitting around like a Stepford wife planning “little pretty outfits” so that she doesn’t get seen in last week’s getup.  Mrs. O understood this was her man’s election night on November 6th 2012.  This was not America’s Next Top Model night!  Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama was there to support her husband not upstage him on some superficial fashion runway.  That’s what you call a woman of substance.

God bless Barack Obama and his first lady Michelle Obama.  Obama forward.  That is all.

“My most important title is still “mom-in-chief.” My daughters are still the heart of my heart and the center of my world.”
