The Fashion Records Spotlight: Lady D

She is classical and soulful. She belts a sound that is all too good to be in this era. Lady D has an impressive vibe of vocals that sound like they should be more honored coming from a vinyl record player. Meet the girl behind those vocal cords:

After being sought after by music director “Blake Leyh” to submit music for the critically
acclaimed HBO’s series “The Wire”. “Lady D.” was convinced that the
world was ready… The question was? Was She?

Name:  Denine “Lady D.” Wilson

Nickname or Artist Name that you are known by (and what it means):

Lady D.

It means it’s more then cool to be A LADY

Location: International

How would you describe your music?

My music is the voices of those who came before me (living, breathing, alive).  My music is conviction and inspiration.   My music is smooth, soulful, vintage.  My music is pain and redemption.  My music is the voice of Baltimore’s strength; my music is love expressing itself.  My music is a declaration of “A New Day”!

What image do you see/want your music to convey?

When I was just a little “lady bug”  I couldn’t understand why my mother didn’t want me to watch certain music video’s; I now understand that she was just trying to protect me from the influence that certain music video’s could have on me.

I want my music to convey the message “that it’s more then cool to be a lady”; and being a lady is not about how much you can take off but it’s all about being authentic and knowing your worth. I want to show young girls that there are other ways to express themselves without compromising who they are. Now that’s Sexy!

Where were you raised? How did that influence your music?

I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Baltimore is one of those places were diamonds are shaped.  If you Know anything about a diamond – you know that it has to go thru the fire; it has too be crushed, pressed, and put under pressure in order to be perfected.  This is what my city did for me.  Baltimore made me strong and now my desire is to give strength and hope back to Baltimore.  There are so many diamonds there that the world is longing to see.

Give us an idea how a day with Lady D shoes would go like……

Well I wake up super early and go to sleep late. Between recording, working out, rehearsing, conference meetings, practicing or preparing for a show my days can get crazy… But there are certain parts of my day that always remain the same… Every morning I wake up I say “Thank you God”; I make it a point to talk to my mom and dad at least ounce or twice a day; I meditate and drink plenty of water (most times).   I never miss out on getting a good laugh from my big brother “Jwil” (drummer), and my two awesome nephews.   My Faith and family is the key to my success…

Are you a signed artist or if not, would you ever entertain the idea of being a signed artist?

I am currently in negotiations with two record labels. So we will see how that goes. Meanwhile I have to stay focus and work.  Having a good work ethic, and a determined attitude, will take you across waters, over many mountains and into distant lands.  Europe here I come!

Have you been invited to tour?

I’ve been invited to tour with Mullyman on his “To the Sky Tour” that will take place in 2012.  I’m excited.  I would love to open for Sade, Kem or The Roots Crew!

Do you have a personal style of yours or a key feature that is part of your wardrobe?

My style is Classic and “Ladylike”.  I love being simple but timeless. Satin gloves always give me that feeling of magic when I’m on the stage.

What are some of the artists you listened to when you were younger?

My family has a huge musical collection ranging from gospel to R&B soul: My mother being a pastor introduced me to some of the greatest gospel artist of all time: Mahaila Jackson, Kim Burrell, and Ce Ce Winans; but, my world changed when I was 17 and a man from my part-time job brought me a Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn CD.

The rest is now history in the making :)

Who are your musical influences?

Jean Carter Billie Holiday, Bessy Smith, Sarah Vaughn, Anita Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, Sade, Lala Hathaway, Donny Hathaway, Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Oleta Adams, Regina Bell, Roberta Flack, These singers have a way of touching the soul.   And I can’t forget about my mother Tanya Wilson, who taught me my first note…

What is your best attribute?

I love to study:  some would say I’m somewhat of a nerd but I believe understanding is POWER

What is the most memorable piece of advice someone has given you?

Never Stop!!!!— Practice, Practice, Practice —- My voice teacher Ms. Jean Carter of the Nathan Carter School of Music in Baltimore changed my life with those words.

Favorite lyrics from a song?

So many tears and so much pain, so much hurt, but so much to gain. …”Welcome to “A New Day”…. I wrote these words after my world had been turned upside down.  They helped me renew my strength.  They help me now.

By the way Booman created the ultimate track for me…

What are your future goals?

You know it’s funny, I had a conversation with God ounce, He asked me: What is it that you want? I responded that I wanted to be a famous singer and he replied and said: “That’s why I’m God and your not…. DREAM

BIGGER… My Bladylike”.  Motto is: Think it, Speak it, Sing It, Wear it, Then walk it out.

What are the most challenging things you have had to face so far with your music, with the industry?

One of my greatest challenges used to be that I didn’t sound like everyone else.  Now it’s my greatest strength.  Being a woman in the music industry is  tough all by it self.  It takes more then talent to get you thru the door.  It takes dedication, determination, and drive.  On days I feel I can’t go any more… I Press and Go Harder and then I Just Do It…

Do you have some words of wisdom, or advice, for anyone trying to get into the music industry?

Never stop being a student.  be patient and know that practice makes permanent.   Love yourself it will serve you well, give all that you have honestly and it’s sure to produce something “GREAT”

Word you live by?

Martin Luther King: “If you can’t fly then run; if you can’t run, then walk, if you

Can’t walk then crawl but whatever you do just keep moving…

There’s sure to be “A New Day” ahead – This last statement was just my two cents :0)
