Fashion Feature: Toyosi Mobereola (AAMAA Couture)
Toyosi Mobereola is a fascinating couture designer. I was supposed to interview her on Friday but, she got caught up in a fashion event. So, here we are finally. We caught up t o her busy schedule and got down to know her. Her designs are so great that I prefer to think of them as moving art. Moving, dancing, flowing and making a lucky lady feel, and look, beautiful. I am glad I came across Toyosi and her wonderful world at AAMAA Couture. Meet the lady who works some unique magic behind every piece of fabric.
Introduce AAMAA Couture and the designer behind the brand:
Well the word AAMAA is made up of the initials of my husband and my children. My family on the whole inspired me to pursue my dream and I felt the need to reflect their importance to my company somehow.
Who inspires your designs?
My designs are actually inspired by globalization. As a graduate in International Relations, I have an interest in Politics, namely the way in which the world is now interacting as a global village. I represent this integration of nations by bringing two nations which reflect who I am as a person. African meets the West. I do this by using African fabrics to create fashion with a western twist
What is your target audience for your collection?
My target audience consists of young women who like to make a statement wherever they go. Women who are confident and aim to be individual, rather than following what’s said to be ‘in fashion’. I target women who know what they like and are not afraid to reflect this in their styling.
Where can people buy your items?
For now, people can purchase my clothing via my website, AAMAACouture.co.uk and I will be exhibiting at a few shows in the coming months, details of which will be on my website in due time.
Where are you based?
I am currently based in London, UK
Who are your favorite emerging designers and what is it that you love about them?
My favorite emerging designers at the moment are, without a doubt, Mong of Jiang Mong Hsuan. Not only is his work incredible, he has to be one of the most genuinely down to earth people I have ever come across. His fashion is delicate and makes you think of summer days.
If you had to give men and women advice on style what would you say?
What I would say is to always be true to yourself in whatever you do. If you like to dress a particular way, do so. There are too many rules in the world already for there to be rules in fashion. Fashion is about being creative, having fun and most important, being a reflection of you.
What is your best attribute?
My best attribute are my hands. Anyone who knows me will say that I am a girl of many talents. I do my own hair, all the DIY jobs in my home, landscaping and of course, making clothes.
I wouldn’t be where I am without my hands.
Favorite lyrics from a song?
“ im not scared of lions and tigers and bears, no im not, but im scared of loving you”. ~Jasmine Sullivan~
This to me is about conquering what I feel is a big fear, love.
Words you live by….
I’m still standing.
